Mouth of the Columbia - OR. and WA. On November 7, 1805, Capt. Clark wrote in his journal of the "great joy" the Corps experienced as they first glimpsed the Pacific Ocean. Except it wasn't the Pacific Ocean, it was an estuary -- the mouth of the Columbia, near Gray's Bay. The weather was unusually bad. Strong winds, heavy rain and tides kept the Corps pinned down on the eastern side of Point Ellice for nearly a week.
